New York, NY (February 28, 2011) - New Yorkers were dancing in their ice skates to the animated feature Happy Feet at the opening of the Winter Film Festival at Citi Pond at Bryant Park. For four nights this winter visitors to the ice rink and Celcius restaurant were treated to ice skating themed movies on a 3-story tall outdoor movie screen.
Brooklyn, NY-based Fresh Air Flicks installed the inflatable screen each night at the edge of the ice rink. The 46’x30’ tall inflatable frame held a 40’x22’ theatrical screen surface. Fresh Air Flicks used a Christie LX1500 for digital projection and added two JBL EON15 speakers to the existing sound system which also piped the movie soundtrack into the on-site restaurant.
The freezing temperatures and frequent snowstorms were no match for the Fresh Air Flicks and Citi Pond crew. The crew installed hot air blowers behind the screen, which nearly froze during each show, to keep it from cracking.
Many New Yorkers are familiar with the location which is also home to the world famous Bryant Park Summer Film Festival.
“The Winter Film Festival in Bryant Park is one of the most unique settings for an outdoor movie I’ve ever seen,” explains Glen Sanders, President of Fresh Air Flicks. “Watching a movie outdoors while ice skating among the skyscrapers of Manhattan created a magical setting in this already iconic location.”
